Frédéric Comyn - best croissant in Paris [2007] ?

Decided to go to the edge of Paris today to try what was voted to be the best croissant in Paris in 2007.

Photobucket

I went a bit late - around 12h00 so wasn't as fresh as it could have been. Surprisingly, it was not flaky at all. Very dense, and a bit chewy. The taste was definitely there, but not the texture. I also tried a pepite au chocolat. Just like the croissant, it had the flavor but not the texture.

I would have to say "no" on the best croissant in Paris, as I have had better from random boulangerie's in the 18th. Tant pis.

Breizh Café

This midi, Pim, Matt, and I met up with (omg, it's~!) David Lebovitz for lunch. He brought us to one of his favorite crêperies - Breizh Café. It was crowded so we couldn't be seated until 14h00. We all took a coffee at a nearby café which, I swear, had the best looking and authentic club sandwich I have seen in Paris thus far. And you know the French love "Le Club." That will be the next culinary stop.

Okay back to the subject. The owner of Breizh Café is originally from Bretagne, and his wife from Japan. The crêpiers/crêpières are mostly Japanese, and you can see the Japanese influence on some of the things like the wasabi salad and oysters, but the gallettes as I have learned is the true name for buckwheat crêpes, stay true to their roots.

I got my gallette with champignons de Paris, smoked poitrine, crème, and piment d'espelette.

And for dessert, we shared a crêpe natural avec caramel salée et glace de sarrasin. (Salted caramel with buckwheat ice-cream)

Crêpes have been my favorite thing ever since I was 5. Doesn't matter what time, season, or country I am in, I can always eat crêpes. This is now my new favorite crêperie in Paris. Traditional menu made with the highest quality of ingredients. I can't wait to go back. (David has a great post about it here).

Le Jeu de Quilles

"Amuse bouche" - a rich, buttery, flaky, moist croissant d'amande et chocolat noir and a brioche sucrée feuilletée from a delicious bio (organic) boulangerie Moisin. That will be in another post.

Lunch at Le Jeu de Quilles. Tiny place. Not more than 16 covers. Two cooks. Simple food but good. They get their meat from the butcher next door.

Plate of delicious charcuterie to start.

Of course wine - a white and red. And some water with gazeuse.

Pim and I went halfsies on everything - it was a great idea. Like a menu degustation !

Really delicious rabbit terrine. Perfectly seasoned and very moist. Strong liver flavor but balanced. Fabulous.

Chevreau (Goat) braised with "couscous" and piment. The meat was so tender and well-seasoned. Rich, fell off the bone.

Crêperie de Josselin

Tonight Andrew and I met up with Nina, Christophe, French friends whom I met through Timo, their daughter Sorel, and their friend Merlin at Crêperie de Josselin, un restaurant Bretagne (for those who didn't know, crêpes come from Brittany in the northwest of France). It was really crowded here which is a good sign. I always wanted to eat at a sit down crêperie but wasn't sure which ones were good. This restaurant was excellent. The savory crêpes are made with sarrasin, or buckwheat. I ordered a savory crêpe with bacon, goat cheese, spinach, and eggs. It was absolutely delicious. We ordered a couple pitchers of cider as well. Delicious. Us girls couldn't finish our crêpes, so the boys helped us. hah!

For the dessert crepe, Andrew and I split a salted caramel crêpe with vanilla ice-cream inside. They are known here for their salted caramel in sauce form, and ice-cream. Sorel ordered the ice-cream. Both were very, very good. The ice-cream wasn't too sweet or overpowering either. The crêpes are around 6 - 7 Euro each. Very very highly recommended.

Afterwards, we met up with Andrew's friend Tristan in the 6th at The Moose, a Canadian bar that we used to frequent back when I lived off rue du Four. We had a chill night with some drinks. A bunch of American girls ended up coming by who were friends of a friend of Tristan. One of the girls was actually from my hometown in California and went to my high school. Small world ! We had a couple of the same teachers, but she was quite a bit younger than me. Damn, I am getting old ! JK. Nina, Christophe, Merlin and I called it a night around 1H30.
