Cupping @ Barefoot Coffee Roasters

I finally made it to a free Cupping at Barefoot Coffee Roasters. For those of you who haven't been there, it's a café and roastery located in Santa Clara. I believe they have another one in Palo Alto as well.

We arrived 45 minutes early so Luigi and I decided to grab a pot of Green tea "Tuo-Cha" (which was just okay taste-wise, IMO) and a rasberry brioche donut made by Satura Cakes which was decent. (Satura Cakes makes a mean Kouign Amann though ! Practically better than the one I had in Britanny. Oops, did I just say that?!)

Shortly, we started the cupping. Ummm more caffeine !

Here is Steve, the barista (o?) who is in charge of the cupping demos.

We were given a blind tasting. He prepared three different types of beans.

The silver cup was filled with lightly roasted beans from El Salvador. Apparently it was sweet and savory with hints of sun-dried tomato. (I am not there yet. I just know I found it too acidic).

The blue cup was an Ethiopian Sidamo - arabica beans noted for it's bold spice, chocolate, and/or floral aromas. I preferred this most because of the more bold and woody flavor and less acidic taste. But unfortunately, I haven't been blown away by any coffee here like the espressos I've had in Italy.

The green cup was filled with a decaf Sumatra which I found to be nicely balanced yet a bit bland with a short finish. Apparently it had floral hints of lavendar (again, not there yet).

I've always loved coffee and really want to learn more about it. (Had my first cup when I was 11 !) This cupping demo was a lot of fun. I liked the fact that Steven decided to do a blind tasting first as to not be influenced by the type of bean. Will be stopping by more often.

Je pense à la France...

It's been awhile! I hope I will have some more food-related updates coming up in the next few weeks.

In other random news, I think I have personally spoken with at least 30 potential future Ferrandi students. I should receive commission! hahahaha ;)

Andrew's in town == eating + houseparty at Chez Chieze

Andrew drove down from Santa Rosa today.

The day consisted of ramen at Ryowa, dinner at Turkish restaurant, Sultana, and dessert at Evvia which was interesting since it was the first time we had a rude waitress (I have been eating there for almost 8 years!).

Simply put, we were greeted with:

"What do you want."

When given our desserts, she demanded from us to:

"Give me those (extra plates)."

And when we finished paying, she picked up the bill while we were still at the table.

Her name was Gina. "Gina from Jersey". ;)

So afterwards, we went to a houseparty at Chez Chieze. I mean this was a real HOUSE party. The house was HUGE 2-story with a bunch of bedrooms... maybe five or six - a total of seven people live there. Very Real World-ish. It was swell. Regardes.

And a digital camera for guests to take random photos, with lots of props to play around with. The photos were then displayed against a white wall near the entrance.

...du thé, du café, du biscuits et du chocolat de France

Got a few packages from France today... one being a little something from Nina. I simply asked for a bag of fresh ground Italian coffee...

When I picked up the package from the post office, I could smell the coffee already.

Then I went home, opened up the box and found this:

Bun Bo Hue An Nam

Normally this place is PACKED and requires a 45 minute wait just for lunch. But we lucked out and got in right when four people left. This place only serves pho, or Bun Bo Hue (with or without ox penis because, you know, eating penis is good for men - stamina, fertility, etc etc).

I LOVE me some BUN BO HUE ! Delicious, SPICY broth, pieces of beef, pork, tendon, fish cakes, noodles, and blood - which I gave to Carlo to eat. Ummmm.

Carlo ordered it with Ox penis. He couldn't tell which pieces of meat were the Ox penis. He ate it all and enjoyed it so it must have been good. =)

Ordered a coconut bean drink to balance out the spice.
